Culture and History

The Chitalishte Nov Zhivot Cultural Center in Momchilgrad was founded on February 19, 1926. It houses the Momchilgrad Museum Collection, which has existed since 1969 and comprises more than 500 exhibits. It presents the archaeological heritage and mineral diversity of the area.

The Momchilgrad Art Gallery opened in 1992. It contains more than 280 works of painting, sculpture, and graphic art and hosts solo and group exhibitions by local and national artists.

The Church of St. Tsar Boris-Mikhail I in the center of Momchilgrad was built in 1938. Next to the church, an ossuary commemorates the people who were killed in the Russo-Turkish War and the Balkan Wars.

The St. Spirit Chapel is located in Momchil Yunak Forest Park. It was restored in 1996 on the foundations of an older chapel, using donations from local Christians and Muslims. An annual town-wide gathering is held there on the feast day after which it is named.

The Old Mosque near the center of Momchilgrad was built around 300 years ago and continues to be used uninterruptedly as an active place of worship. The Naim Suleymanoglu House Museum is open to visitors. The Chukovo rock cult complex is also located nearby, featuring a huge lion figure carved from monolithic rock at the summit of Stramni Rid.

Nature

The Petrified Forest near Raven consists of upright fossilized trees exposed along approximately 200 meters of a ravine; it is described as a unique natural phenomenon. It was formed when undersea volcanic lava buried a forest beneath layers of ash 25 to 30 million years ago, preserving the trees in an upright position.

A route of 868 painted steps connects Momchil Yunak Forest Park with Momchilgrad. The stairway route has been renovated with lighting, railings, benches, and waste bins.

Local Products

The Momchilgrad Tourist Information Office provides information about eco-trails, tourist routes, restaurants, accommodations, and transport services in the region. It also provides information about local meat and dairy products, wine, and honey, as well as their producers.

Near Vryalo lies the Sharapana. It is believed to have been used to process grapes into wine.
