Vetren: Hotels and Accommodation

Geographical Setting

Vetren lies at the exit of the Trajan's Gate–Palanka Pass, on both sides of the Selko Gorge. Those wishing to book a hotel in Vetren can then continue their accommodation search. In the broader regional context, Septemvri provides access to the historic Septemvri–Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway route through the Rhodopes. It connects mountain landscapes and provides access to natural and historical attractions from its stations and stops.

History

Emporion Pistiros lies in the land of Vetren, on the left bank of the Maritsa River within the Upper Thracian Plain. Excavations have uncovered part of the eastern fortification wall there, including a gate, bastion, and tower. Emporion Pistiros is dated from the first part of the 5th century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century BC. The Thracian Tomb near Vetren lies immediately beside Emporion Pistiros and can be visited by prior request through the archaeological museum; it dates from the 4th century BC.

Bona Mansio lies in the land of Vetren on flat terrain, immediately north of the road between Vetren and Boshulya. The structures currently documented are understood as a Late Antique fortified settlement or as a fort that took over the station. The site forms a low elevation enclosed by a mostly buried fortification wall.

Culture

Vetren has a Dervishovden tradition and a local festival of the same name. The tradition includes masquerade performances, the Kvas ritual, and wedding customs; the festival is associated with traditional rituals.

The community center in Vetren houses an urn containing soil from Lamartine's grave. Lamartine visited Vetren in 1832.

Region

The wineries of Vetren are included in a proposed wine route intended to promote Vetrensko wine.
