Perushtitsa: Hotels and Accommodation

Perushtitsa combines historic sites with routes into the mountains. The Red Church, also known as the Basilica of Saint Mary, is a partially preserved Late Antique and early medieval Christian monument near Perushtitsa that was in use from the 4th to the 14th century and is designated as a monument of national importance. Culture

The Danov School was built in 1850 in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel. Today, it serves as a museum and art gallery; temporary and guest exhibitions by Bulgarian artists are held in the basement. In 1876, the Danovo School was converted into a hospital operated with funds provided by Lady Emily Strangford.

The Church of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael houses a stone sarcophagus containing the remains of revolutionaries. The Perushtitsa Historical Museum offers themed tours and talks in its museum halls and at associated historical monuments.

Nature

Perushtitsa is described as a starting point for hikes in the Cherнатishki section of the Western Rhodopes. Eco-trails connecting some of Perushtitsa's cultural heritage sites offer views of the historic and natural landscape.

The Manastirski Skali megalithic sanctuary lies about 5 km south of Perushtitsa in the mountains. It can be reached by car in the direction of Skobelevo and Churen; parking is available near the turnoff to the monastery, after which the route continues on foot along an unpaved road. A 700-metre footpath leads to the Red Church, with a visitor centre built at its destination.

History

The Peristitsa Fortress stands on a rocky hill 668 metres high, less than 3 km south of Perushtitsa. Above the town, on Vlasevitsa Hill, rises the 23-metre-high Monument of the Three Generations. From there, the view extends across the entire town, the city of Plovdiv and the Rhodope Mountains. The monument can be reached by car or on foot via a paved road.

Wine and Art

At the Vinograd Winery in Perushtitsa, guided cellar tours and wine tastings are offered by prior arrangement. Red, white and rosé wines are produced there.
