Culture
The Abritus Archaeological Reserve is located 2 km from Razgrad, is of national cultural significance and is one of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. Abritus was established at the end of the 1st century AD on the remains of a Thracian settlement. The fortification from the 4th century enclosed 15 hectares and had four gates and 35 defensive towers. Its walls were 1,400 metres long, 2.10 to 3 metres thick and up to 12 metres high; they were topped with battlements. Guides assist visitors at the Abritus Archaeological Reserve.
The Ethnographic Museum in Varosh is dedicated to the Kapantsi ethnographic group and showcases their everyday life and spiritual culture. The Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Varosha was built in 1860 and rebuilt in 1903; it is described as a notable example of church architecture from the mid-19th century. The Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi House Museum documents the couple’s life, their educational work and their household through photographs, documents and a reconstructed domestic interior.
The Ethnographic Complex in Pobit Kamak comprises three restored houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, with reconstructed interiors representing the traditional homes of mountain settlers, as well as a restored windmill. The traditional distillation of rakija and the production of madzhun are demonstrated there alongside other domestic crafts. For visitor groups, the complex can organise a demonstration of a traditional custom of the mountain settlers upon prior request and depending on interest.
