Warbiza: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture

The Church of St. Dimitar in Varbitsa was built in 1842. The Troshka-Mahala Mosque was built in 1900.

In the centre of Varbitsa, the Vasilakieva House houses the municipality’s only ethnographic collection. The collection includes a donation from Dr Anton Sirakov comprising 520 volumes. The Vasilakeva House is a two-storey Bulgarian National Revival house of the Kamchiya type, with a wooden upper floor, deep roof overhangs and an open veranda accessed via an external staircase.

At the Gerai Saray (Konak) site, a high stone wall has been preserved. The site also includes the remains of a large building that burned down in the 1980s. Archaeological finds and burial mounds in the Varbitsa area date approximately to the 3rd to 4th century BC.

Traditional customs include an Ivanovden ritual in Varbitsa, during which married men bathe unmarried men in the Gerila River. The celebration includes an orchestra, wrestling matches and a men’s horo dance.

Nature

The Momin Grad nature reserve covers 6.6 hectares of beech forest. The trees have an average age of 160 years. The Kotlenska Planina Natura 2000 zone protects wild birds; 56 bird species are listed there for nature conservation purposes.

Trails and History

The Varbishki Pass Hut is located in Mator Planina on the northern branch of the eastern Stara Planina, near Varbishki Pass. It has capacity for 62 people. From Varbitsa, a nine-kilometre paved road leads to the hut.

In Byzantine chronicles from the year 679, Varbishki Pass is recorded as “Verigava”.
