Culture and History

A notable historical landmark in the town is the Orthodox Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. It was built in Pomoshtitsa in 1907–1909, consecrated in 1926, and reconsecrated on November 8, 2012.

During the Ottoman period, Pomoshtitsa was formerly known by the names Yardam or Yardam koy. The historical name Yardam is explained as meaning “help.” The settlement now called Pomoshtitsa is recorded in an Ottoman tax register from 1541 under the name Yardam. In 1573, it was listed in an Ottoman tax register under the name Shukur Hebib.

In August 1877, almost the entire settlement burned down during the Russo-Turkish War. Pomoshtitsa was formed from two neighborhoods: the Old Quarter and the New Quarter. The Old Quarter is also known as the Bogdanov Quarter, while the New Quarter is also known as the Angel Quarter. The settlement was relocated because the plague broke out at its original site. In 1885–1886, several families of Aegean Bulgarians settled in Pomoshtitsa.
