Vishovgrad: Hotels and Accommodation

In the wider Pavlikeni area lies the Negovanka Gorge, a wooded gorge with successive cascades, waterfalls, plunge pools and cliffs up to 80 metres high. History and Culture

The remains of a Roman fortress are located on Chukata Peak in the Vishovgrad area. A stone sarcophagus belonging to a Roman priest and his wife was also found there. Bacho Kiro began his teaching career in Vishovgrad and received the nickname “Bacho” there. Vishovgrad was the birthplace of Mircho Voivode, who established Bulgarian rule in Tarnovo for two months. The mother of Petko Slaveykov, a poet of the Bulgarian National Revival, was born in Vishovgrad.

An ethnographic museum has been established in the community centre of Vishovgrad, focusing on local life and traditions. Vishovgrad also has the Orthodox Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah. The Radi Fichev Community Center in Vishovgrad houses a public collection with materials on the history of the settlement from antiquity to the present day. Guided visits to the church can be arranged through the Vishovgrad Public Historical Collection with the permission of the priests.

Memorial Sites

A monument to fallen fighters stands in the schoolyard of Vishovgrad. Also in the schoolyard, on the site of the former village church, stands the Pantheon of the Fallen Chetniks of Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja. It was built in 2003 with donated funds and through the work of local residents. Vishovgrad’s memorial plaque to Simeon Sabev marks the house of a rebel from Pop Hariton’s band who died at Dryanovo Monastery. In the centre, near the Orthodox Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah, there is a memorial plaque to Pop Balcho.

In the wider Pavlikeni area, Kanladere is associated with battles fought by the detachment led by Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja. A monument to Stefan Karadja stands at Kanladere, where he is believed to have been captured. The Kanladere battle monument is located approximately 3.5 kilometres southwest of Vishovgrad, in the area also known as Kyrvav dol. After the Battle of Kanladere, Pop Balcho Kolev buried the fallen fighters from the detachments of Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja in the churchyard of the old village church.

Nature and Nearby Area

The Emen Natura 2000 protected site, code BG0000216, includes the lands of Vishovgrad. The Zarapovo Geocomplex is one of Bulgaria’s 50 lesser-known tourist sites. It is located approximately 3 km from Vishovgrad in the direction of Emen. The walk to Zarapovo Waterfall begins near a car park and takes approximately 20 minutes there and back.

Trails

The trails towards Dalgi dol and Kanladere are maintained by the Rositsa Tourist Society of Pavlikeni. A hiking trail leads from Kanladere to Dalgi dol in the Vishovgrad area.
