Culture

Tarnovgrad was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire for more than two centuries, from the late 12th to the 14th century. Archaeological excavations at Tsarevets have uncovered the foundations of 470 residential buildings. During Tarnovgrad’s time as the capital, Tsarevets had 23 churches. On Trapezitsa, archaeological excavations have uncovered parts of the fortification system.

The Archaeological Museum presents the exhibition “Tarnovgrad – Capital of Bulgaria in the 12th–14th Centuries.” The Center for the Presentation of the Cultural Heritage of the Trapezitsa Architectural and Museum Reserve uses an interactive exhibition to present the medieval capital and the Second Bulgarian Empire. The Museum of the Bulgarian Revival and the Constituent Assembly has a restored hall in which the Constituent Assembly met in Tarnovo in 1879.

The Church of the Forty Martyrs was built and painted on the orders of Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II. It commemorates Ivan Asen II’s victory over Theodore Komnenos in 1230. The Shishman Bath is one of the few well-preserved medieval baths in Bulgaria and is located at the northern foot of Tsarevets next to the Vladishki Bridge. Samovodska Charshiya is a historic area consisting of two streets with shops selling goods and crafts, workshops, and inns.

Sveta Gora Park has more than six kilometers of paths for walking and cycling.

Getting there

Direct trains run from Plovdiv and Ruse to Veliko Tŭrnovo. Trains from Sofia and Varna serve Gorna Oryahovitsa; the town is seven kilometers away, and connecting services are available from there. By car, Veliko Tŭrnovo is located at the intersection of the E85 and E772. The city can be reached by bus or train from larger Bulgarian cities.
