Donji Humac: Hotels and Accommodation

Donji Humac on Brač is a place of religious buildings, a centuries-old stoneworking tradition, art, trails, and archaeological traces.

Culture

The parish church of St. Fabian and Sebastian preserves a 13th-century fresco described as one of the oldest in southern Croatia. The church is associated with an enduring pilgrimage tradition; at the same time, it dominates Donji Humac with its Baroque bell tower.

The historic churches in the surrounding area associated with Donji Humac include the 10th-century Church of St. Elijah, built on the remains of a Roman mausoleum; the early Romanesque Church of St. Luke; and the Church of the Holy Cross, dating from the 14th to 15th century. Numerous stone houses in Donji Humac bear witness to a centuries-old stoneworking tradition.

The Jakšić Gallery displays paintings, jewellery made from semi-precious stones, and stone sculptures. It is located in a family courtyard surrounded by the artists’ workshops; it also features utilitarian objects made of Brač stone and stone furniture. Stone sculptures created during the “International Sculptural Symposiums” organised in Donji Humac are exhibited around the village church.

Landscape

Kopačina Cave lies northwest of Donji Humac, 500 metres west of the Gnjilac quarry. Its archaeological layers include Epigravettian artefacts and fauna from the Late Ice Age, followed by Mesolithic tools, Bronze Age pottery, and a Bronze Age axe.

A plateau on the southern side of Kopačina Cave offers a view across the Donji Humac valley towards the west coast of Brač.

Trails

The Dolčevita hiking trail is just over 6 kilometres long and leads to Donji Humac and Dračevica. The “Biciklistička tura od vrha do mora” cycling tour runs from Vidova Gora downhill along a rural road to Nerežišća and to the inland village of Donji Humac.
