Slunj: Hotels and Accommodations

In Rastoke, the Slunjčica spreads across 23 waterfalls before flowing into the Korana. The river is protected as a significant landscape; the protection covers its entire course as well as one kilometre of the Korana.

Nature

The Slunjčica educational trail is part of the “Šuma i vode” excursion route and leads upstream from Rastoke to the source of the Slunjčica. Natura Viva offers one-hour educational guided walks along the Slunjčica. The river is a habitat of the rare creeping marshwort (Apium repens) and part of the Natura 2000 ecological network.

The upstream swimming area of Kotlac is about a 15-minute walk from the town’s main swimming area and features shallow natural pools with cascades.

History

Slunj is recorded as a fortified town as early as 1390. In 1409, a settlement or market named Slunj is documented on the opposite side of the Slunjčica Canyon. The town park was established in 1871 along with new administrative, public and religious buildings.

Trg Zrinskih i Frankopana is home to a stone fountain dating from 1892. A monument there also commemorates Milan Neralić, the first Croatian to win an Olympic bronze medal in fencing. A hiking route passes a fortification from the time of the Frankopans above the Slunjčica, probably dating from the 14th century. Napoleon’s warehouse is designated as a historical sight on a hiking route in Slunj.

Culture

Rastoke is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods as a cultural-historical rural ensemble. The oldest mill in the watermill settlement of Rastoke was built in the 17th century. In 1962, there were 22 mills, four fulling mills, seven wash troughs and 28 houses with associated outbuildings there.

Slovin Unique Estate in Rastoke houses a small ethnographic collection depicting the life of local ancestors. At Slovin Unique-Rastoke, visitors can personally participate in designing souvenirs made from natural materials. The Jareb family mill in Rastoke is open to visitors; there, it is possible to watch grain being milled, and several types of flour are also sold.

“Dani mlina” was listed in 2025 as an autumn event celebrating the beginning of autumn and the mill heritage in Rastoke.

Trails and Activities

The hiking guide for Slunj-Rastoke is divided into five visitor zones. The trails listed in it range from 1 km to 6.5 km. Slunj’s cycling network includes more than 100 kilometres of routes; seven marked routes are classified as easy, moderate and challenging.

RastRaft takes place annually in Slunj as part of the European Rafting Cup.

Surroundings

Nearby, OPG Novković in Točak offers visitors an introduction to farm work, gathering hay and livestock feed, preparing winter supplies and collecting forest fruits. Also nearby, OPG Novković produces eight varieties of organic cheese under the collective name “Koranski sir” using traditional technology.
