Karlovac County is shaped by the Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra rivers. The region is also known for its karst landscapes, cycling routes and cultural sites. When comparing hotels, first decide whether water activities, cycling, nature or a visit to towns such as Ogulin and Ozalj should be the focus.

Karlovac County at a glance

  • The county has almost 700 kilometres of cycling routes and more than 200 kilometres of waterways for rafting, kayaking and canoeing.
  • The public circular promenade in Rastoke is open daily, year-round.
  • Kamanje is accessible by train; the route follows the Kupa through a rocky, wooded gorge.

What landscapes define the county?

Water takes many forms here. Lake Sabljaci is a 170-hectare reservoir formed along the course of the Zagorska Mrežnica. There are 22 waterfalls in the Generalski Stol area. Near Plaški lies Lake Sinjac, which, according to confirmed information, is 203 metres deep and among the deepest karst lakes in the world. The deepest of its four sinkholes, Sinjac 1, is currently considered Croatia’s third-deepest explored “mountain eye”.

These places offer different insights into the landscape: a reservoir along a river, waterfalls and a deep karst lake. If you are particularly interested in geology, the cave systems are also worth exploring. The protected landscape of the Barać Caves and its associated Natura 2000 network are within the municipality of Rakovica.

What can you experience on the water and in the caves?

In Rastoke, an area in Slunj, the Slunjčica cascades over several tufa barriers and waterfalls before flowing into the Korana. The public circular promenade there is open daily, year-round, so you can plan a visit at any time of year.

Another natural feature lies in the centre of Ogulin: Đulin ponor is a 40-metre-deep chasm. The Dobra’s surface course ends there, and the river disappears into the more than 16-kilometre-long Đula-Medvedica cave system. Vrlovka Cave has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1962. Of the 380 metres explored, 330 metres have been prepared for visitors.

Which activities and routes are available?

Cyclists can explore almost 700 kilometres of routes in the county. One described route runs from Netretić via Vinski Vrh to Novigrad na Dobri, then towards the Dobra Valley. The stages identify specific places to help you plan your ride; check current route information before setting out, as trail conditions can change.

There are more than 200 kilometres of waterways for rafting, kayaking and canoeing. The many bodies of water and variety of fish species also provide a basis for angling tourism. Riding clubs in the county offer horse rides in natural surroundings.

A well-maintained hiking trail to Vodenica starts in Kamanje and is looked after by the “Vrlovka” mountaineering club. The climb leads to a beautiful viewpoint. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Kamanje is accessible by train; the route follows the Kupa through a rocky, wooded gorge. Check the timetable before travelling.

Where can you find culture and regional experiences?

Ivanina kuća bajke (Ivana’s Fairy Tale House) opened in Ogulin in 2013. This multimedia, interactive house presents the fairy tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić and those of other Croatian and international writers. In Ozalj, the old town stands on a rocky outcrop above the Kupa and is also home to a local history museum.

Wineries on the slopes of Ozalj, Draganić and Vivodina offer walks through vineyards, tastings with local delicacies and conversations with winemakers who preserve the tradition. As the availability of individual experiences can change, contact the winery in advance if you are planning a tasting.
