Culture and History

Stari grad Veliki Kalnik was first mentioned on 5 June 1243 in a document issued by King Bela IV. The fortification preserves well-preserved circular Gothic staircases that connect its visible levels. It was developed in several construction phases, including a lower palace from the 16th century and a central defensive complex that connects newer sections with older parts. Stari grad Veliki Kalnik is listed in the Cultural Heritage Register under number Z-4068.

During the reconstruction in the early 16th century, St Brcko Church became a parish church in 1509 and was given a massive bell tower with a defensive function.

Kalnik–Igrišče is a multilayered settlement encompassing the Eneolithic, Late Bronze Age, Late Iron Age, Roman period and Middle Ages. Evidence of local bronze casting has been found there from a settlement dated to the period from the 13th to the 11th century BC. The site lies within the protected landscape of Kalničko gorje at an altitude of approximately 500 metres above sea level.
