The historic center of Sveti Križ Začretje is a Baroque square with the church to the north, as well as a park and the castle to the south. The castle of Sveti Križ Začretje is an imposing late Baroque aristocratic residence whose present form dates from the mid-18th century.
Location
Sveti Križ Začretje lies on a hill in the Krapinčica Valley. The town is also situated along the Zagreb–Macelj road, approximately halfway between Zabok and Krapina.
Culture
The parish church on the main square is described as dating from the 12th century. It still contains stone material from an older Gothic structure. It also includes chapels, a tower, and a choir loft, which were added during a comprehensive renovation in the 18th century.
Visitors can see a private local-history collection of edged weapons and firearms, old documents, contracts, letters, and photographs associated with Stjepan Jačmenica. The Žitnica Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1796, which was restored and opened to visitors in 2000. Exhibitions by the Zvirek ethnographic group are located on the ground floor of the museum.
The Rudi Stipković Gallery has been located in the premises of a local association since 2010. A piano was acquired for the Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery in 2002, enabling concerts to be held there. Prvi glas Zagorja has been held since 1968; auditions are held for the Prvi glas Zagorja Festival and the Children's Festival.
