Geographical Location
Karlobag lies at the foot of the Oštarije Pass, opposite the island of Pag. At the same time, the town is located on the coast between Baška Draga and Draga Tatinja.
Culture and History
The Capuchin monastery has a rainwater cistern with a diameter of six metres and a capacity of approximately 180,000 litres. The monastery library preserves theological literature from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The Church of Saint Joseph is a single-nave church with a side chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. The church contains a valuable painting of the Last Supper by Christopher Tasco. The Calvary Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows was built in 1727 and converted into a small church in 1740.
The Open-Air Fishing Museum uses Trg Giardin as an open-air exhibition site and presents Karlobag’s fishing and maritime history there. Visitors can access digital content about local fishermen, fishing methods and fish specialities there.
Fortica served to monitor maritime traffic towards Pag and preserves the remains of a cistern used for the water supply. The remains of a smaller four-cornered fortress from the 13th or 14th century have also been preserved there. They are located on a raised plateau approximately 250 metres from the coast.
Hiking
The Karlobag–Baške Oštarije hiking trail is 11.3 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 1,083 metres. It connects the town with Baške Oštarije and uses sections of the historic Karolina and Teresiana roads.
The hiking trail begins in Baška Draga, about ten minutes from Karlobag town centre. A branch reaches the ruins of the Church of Saint Vitus in about ten minutes. The trail offers views of Pag and the peaks of the central Velebit.
Nearby, the Teresiana educational trail is intended exclusively for pedestrians and offers views of the Adriatic, Pag and the Baške Oštarije valley. The historic Teresiana road is classified as a cultural asset.
Coast
At Karlobag’s town beach, there is an access ramp and an aqua lift that enables people with disabilities to reach the sea.
