Culture

Osijek’s Tvrđa is a protected historic core featuring Baroque urban planning and military architecture. Its carefully planned structure brings together military, civic and religious elements around a central square. The Muzej Slavonije has been located there since 1946. The museum’s approximately one hundred collections contain almost 400,000 registered objects. In addition to its work with cultural heritage collections, the Muzej Slavonije also presents exhibition projects.

The Muzej likovnih umjetnosti interprets the artistic heritage from the Baroque period to contemporary art. It contains more than 5,000 objects in its collections of paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and medals. The building that houses the Muzej likovnih umjetnosti is listed in Croatia as protected cultural heritage. The Capuchin monastery was built in the 18th century.

HNK Osijek was inaugurated on 7 December 1907 with a performance of Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride”. The Europa Cinema is used for film screenings and occasional cultural events. Osječko ljeto kulture is a recurring annual cultural event with programmes for different generations and interests at several locations throughout the city.

City and Routes

The Drava Promenade offers an urban cycling experience. A cycle lane connects routes via European Avenue and towards the Baroque Tvrđa. The green banks of the Drava are connected by the Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Nature

The nearby Kopački Rit Nature Park is a Central European wetland known for almost 300 bird species. ZOO Osijek covers 11 hectares in a natural setting on the Drava. In spring, visitors can cross the Drava to ZOO Osijek on the free eko-skel; locally, it is known as a kompa.
