Municipality of Semeljci

Semeljci lies on the northern edge of the Đakovo Plain. The Brána and Semèljčica streams flow through the town; the Semèljčica flows into the Brána. The municipality’s history includes a prehistoric settlement in Semeljci and the parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built between Semeljci and Kešinci. The present-day parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between Semeljci and Kešinci from 1784 to 1788. An image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, known as the Semeljačka Gospa, has been venerated in the church for centuries. The church in Semeljci was also a pilgrimage site; three-day novenas were held before the feast on September 8. The building’s history, the image of the Virgin Mary, and the pilgrimage tradition are distinct aspects of the town’s religious history.

In Koritna, the cultural association Vesela Šokadija holds the “Poklade su, milo janje moje” festival every year during the Carnival season. Easter Monday also sees a horseback procession there, with around 50 riders from the municipality and surrounding places taking part. These two events are associated with different parts of the festive calendar.

June offers further opportunities to take part in local events. The traditional folklore festival Kolo na Vrbaku brings together cultural associations from Croatia and abroad. Antunovo in Kešinci includes a procession from the village centre to the Chapel of Saint Anthony. Also in June, the hunting association Zec from Semeljci, or its group in Koritna, organizes a clay pigeon shooting competition, with teams and individual participants judged.

The second half of the year is represented too: the Tamburica Orchestra of the Municipality of Semeljci holds an annual concert in October. In October, Vesela Šokadija also holds a children’s folklore festival to nurture and preserve folklore traditions and children’s games. On the eve of St. John’s Day, the cultural association Lipa upholds the Ivanje–Lilanje tradition with a demonstration of jumping over a fire and lilanje.

In Vrbica, Pužijada connects local festivities with snail specialties: various snail dishes are prepared there. Rakijada in Semeljci focuses on fruit brandies; they are judged, and the makers of the highest-rated brandies are announced. The two events therefore differ in their culinary themes.

The singing group Semeljačke snaše contributes to the cultural heritage of the Semeljci area. It preserves traditional singing, folk customs, crafts, and traditional dress. Alongside individual festivals, it adds a cultural dimension rooted in forms of expression conveyed through music, customs, and craft traditions.
