UÅ¡tica: Hotels and accommodations

Uštica lies between the Sava and Una rivers, opposite Jasenovac. From 1942 to 1945, the town was the site of a Ustaše camp for Roma and part of the Jasenovac camp system.

Culture and history

The Roma Memorial Center UÅ¡tica is a monument dedicated to the Roma victims of the genocide during the Second World War. It serves to raise awareness of, provide information about, and further research the fate of the Roma. The Roma cemetery, with 21 mass graves, is located next to the memorial center. A black marble memorial plaque marks the cemetery and lists 21 graves. The Jasenovac Memorial Site is responsible for the Roma cemetery in UÅ¡tica.

The House of Wails in Uštica is described as the place where Roma women and children were held captive. A monument to Hajrija Imeri Mihaljić stands in the park behind the Roma Memorial Center. On August 2, 2024, a Samudaripen commemoration ceremony took place at the Roma cemetery in Uštica.

At the Roma camp site associated with UÅ¡tica, at least 17,000 Roma were deported, tortured, and killed during the Second World War.

Getting oriented

From Jasenovac, the Roma cemetery in UÅ¡tica can be reached by crossing the Sava Bridge, following the embankment along the Una, and continuing toward the Orthodox cemetery on Tratinska Street.

Geographical setting

UÅ¡tica is one of ten settlements in the Municipality of Jasenovac. The area of this municipality lies almost entirely within Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.
