Županja: Hotels and Accommodation

In Županja, historic landmarks, cultural events and the river landscape along the Sava coexist. The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Županja was built in 1800. In the centre is the Galerija Veliki Kraj, housed in a traditional Šokac house.

Culture and History

The Gradski muzej Županja comprises two larger and two smaller buildings connected by a museum park and a new administrative building. The first football match on Croatian soil was played in Županja in 1880. Poloji is a popular excursion destination in Županja.

The Zavičajni muzej Stjepana Grubera is located in a border guard tower from the early 19th century. The border guard tower of the Zavičajni muzej Stjepana Grubera is considered the only surviving example of Military Frontier architecture in Croatia.

Šokačko sijelo is the oldest and largest traditional cultural event in the Županja area. Šokačko sijelo includes folk performances, theatre productions, exhibitions, evenings of folklore and poetry, equestrian processions with festively decorated horse-drawn carriages, and a large carnival procession through the city streets.

Events

At “Kruh naš svagdašnji – žetva i vršidba u prošlosti”, visitors can take part in harvesting activities and ride in horse-drawn carts. The event takes place in Županja on the first Saturday in July.

“Županjsko ljeto” aims to promote the production of autochthonous local products. The event is intended to combine concerts and folklore programmes with gastronomic offerings from local hospitality establishments.

Landscape

The Županjski virovi are located along the Sava or on waterways connected to the Spačva forest. The Savski sajam was held on Županja’s town promenade.

Geographical Location

The A3 motorway runs near Županja. A road bridge near Županja also serves as an international border crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina.
