Samobor at a glance

The Poučna staza Otruševec is two kilometres long and has nine stations. Seven cycling routes start and end at Trg kralja Tomislava and cover a total of more than 150 kilometres. Historic sites include the ruins of Stari grad Samobor and the Stari grad Okić fortress. Regional specialties include Rudarska greblica and Samoborski bermet.

What routes and experiences are there?

The Poučna staza Otruševec offers a short, clearly defined walking option: at an easy pace, it takes about an hour and a half. The trail was the first of its kind in Croatia, opened in 1990 and renovated in 2018. Those interested in cycling can choose from seven routes that start and end at Trg kralja Tomislava. Together, they cover more than 150 kilometres through the most scenic areas of Samobor.

The Rudnik svete Barbare above Rude offers a different insight into regional history. The mine is one of Europe’s oldest copper and iron mines. On a guided tour, you can visit underground tunnels that are several centuries old and extend for 350 metres. A separate 1.5-kilometre educational trail focused on mining and botany leads from the Rude primary school to Manja Vas.

What defines the destination’s nature and history?

Grgosova špilja is located at the entrance to Otruševec. The cave is about 30 metres long and 19 metres deep, rich in stalactites and stalagmites, and divided into two chambers. Because of its speleothems, it is designated a protected geomorphological natural monument.

Stari grad Samobor is a ruin built by the Czech king Otokar in 1268. Entry to the ruins is at your own risk only. Stari grad Okić offers a different architectural accent: an old fortress and a rare example of preserved Romanesque architecture in continental Croatia. Its ruins stand at an altitude of 499 metres and offer views of Posavina, Pokuplje, Zagreb, Medvednica and Plešivica.

The Samoborski muzej also presents cultural history. It is housed in a manor house associated with Ferdo Livadić and organises exhibitions as well as music and educational programmes there.

Which specialties are associated with Samobor?

Rudarska greblica is a thin, savoury cake made from baked dough rolled out by hand and filled with fresh cow’s cheese. The specialty has historic ties to the miners of Rude. Its production area includes Rude and neighbouring villages in Zagreb County; the product has a protected geographical indication in the EU.

Samoborski bermet has been associated with Samobor for centuries. It is made with red wine and selected fruits and herbs. At Slastičarnica U prolazu, Samoborska kremšnita is still prepared according to the traditional recipe of its creator, Đuro Lukačić. These traditions sit side by side: a savoury pastry with a mining history, a drink made with wine and herbs, and a sweet pastry prepared according to a time-honoured recipe.

How can you find your way around the places and routes?

For a location-based overview, you can also find pages here for Molvice, Rakov Potok, Kladje, Velika Rakovica, Samobor and Domaslovec. As a transport option, the ferry at Medsave carries day-trippers, cyclists and motorists from one bank to the other for a symbolic fee. It is the fastest route between Samobor and Zaprešić.
