Culture and History

The Augusteum was built around 10 BC. Its sanctuary floor featured a geometric black-and-white mosaic, described as one of the earliest Roman mosaics in Dalmatia. The Augusteum contained marble sculptures of Roman emperors and their family members in larger-than-life size; the site also illustrates the rise and fall of the imperial cult in one place.

The main hall of the Archaeological Museum of Narona displays the in situ remains of the Roman temple. Above them, statues of emperors and their family members stand on a black-and-white mosaic floor. A mosaic presented beneath a glass floor most probably belonged to a Roman taberna. The Roman imperial statues in the collection form the largest surviving group of Roman imperial statues today.

The Archaeological Museum of Narona displays around 900 finds covering the history of the city from the late 3rd century BC to the 15th century. The Narona Archaeological Collection covers the Greek-Hellenistic, Roman, Early Christian, and Venetian periods and spans from the 3rd century BC to the 14th or 15th century. It gives visitors insight into the history and everyday life of Narona from the Hellenistic period to the late Middle Ages.

Vid has an Early Christian baptistery from the 5th century with an exceptionally well-preserved octagonal baptismal font. Architectural remains of the Early Christian church are visible in and around the Church of St Vitus. The church also contains an exhibition of finds from the Early Christian church and the medieval cemetery at the site. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows, locally called Gospa Ledena, stands on the hill of Vid on the acropolis of ancient Narona.

Erešove bare is a preserved and presented archaeological site that can be visited as part of a guided tour along the city walls of Narona in Vid. Erešova kula is an open-air museum of epigraphy featuring Latin inscriptions and other monuments of ancient Narona; this site can also be visited as part of a guided tour along the city walls of Narona.

The terraces of the Archaeological Museum of Narona display stone cultic and funerary monuments. Outside the museum building, the museum has a small archaeological park. Its outdoor terraces host the Naronitansko Cultural Summer, featuring theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, and book presentations. Rimska noć in Naroni is a recurring event in Vid that combines programmes on Roman history with workshops, interactive content, exhibitions, tastings, and evening shows. Nature and Local Cuisine
