Culture and History
Labin’s old town has a well-preserved main square with a 16th-century loggia. Porta Sanfior is the main gate of the city of Labin, dates from 1589 and bears Labin’s coat of arms as well as a lion of the Serenissima. The memorial collection dedicated to Matthias Flacius Illyricus has been located on the first floor of Palazzo Francovich in the old town since its opening on 22 December 1975.
The bell tower of St Justus in Labin was built in 1623 and is 35 metres high. The Labin City Gallery is housed as an exhibition space of the National Museum of Labin in the former Palazzo Luciani in the old town. The National Museum of Labin in Palazzo Battiala-Lazzarini presents the city’s mining history through mine galleries and a mining display.
The Šoht Tower is a 30.93-metre-high steel tower; its vertical shaft extends 570 metres underground. As a monument to the area’s rich mining past, it is regarded as a symbol of Labin and its inhabitants. The so-called Labin Republic refers to the armed uprising of the miners of the Labin region in 1921. Dubrova Sculpture Park is a 40-hectare open-air gallery at the entrance to Labin.
Landscape and Trails
The Sentona Trail runs through a protected natural landscape in the Labin region. The Labinske šterne Trail passes several springs, including Vrućak, Blažićevo and the spring in Negrijeva špilja, and then continues to numerous cisterns in the city of Labin.
The Trail of Divine Springs runs along the waterfalls of the Pećina stream; a spring is located in Negri’s Cave.
Local Products and Cuisine
In addition to fresh produce, the Labin market offers local products such as olive oil, cheese, homemade sausages, honey and wine. Labin’s mining-history-inspired culinary offerings include Labinski krafi, a ravioli-like pasta dish, and black cuttlefish risotto.
