Lanišće is located on the road from Lupoglav towards Rašpor and other villages of Ćićarija. The settlement lies on a southern slope below Orljak, on the edge of a fertile field. The parish of Lanišće was founded in 1609.
Culture and History
The parish church of Saints Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla was built in 1927 on the site of a church dating from 1609. The older complex preserves an imposing Renaissance bell tower. The parish church has a 19-metre-high bell tower with three bells. Inside the church there is also a Gothic wooden crucifix and three marble altars, which were brought here from Trieste Cathedral in 1928.
The parish office of Lanišće is the place where the priest Miroslav Bulešić was killed on 24 August 1947. The parish archive of Lanišće has been preserved since 1632. Saints Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla were honoured at a patron saint's feast in Lanišće in 2021.
The town's historical heritage also includes a tradition of charcoal production. Lanišće is identified as the birthplace of the folklore revivalist Antun Žmak.
Pilgrimage and Traditions
Lanišće's old Mass is a form of Bugarenje rooted in Ćićarija. The Ženska vokalna skupina Lanišće has performed Bugarenje publicly since its foundation in 1976 and preserves this tradition.
During a pilgrimage, pilgrims were shown the contents of a memorial collection in the Lanišće parish house. Lanišće was also the first stop on a pilgrimage along the paths of Blessed Miroslav Bulešić.
