Slum: Hotels and Accommodation

The late Gothic Church of St. Matthew in Slum houses restored frescoes dated to 1555 by a Glagolitic inscription. They depict scenes of the Annunciation, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Saint George slaying the dragon. The combined depiction of St. George and the Harrowing of Hell is considered one of only three surviving examples of its kind in Istria. The figures are painted in the Renaissance manner but retain medieval iconography; the frescoes also depict saints and prophets. Culture

A spreading linden tree with a hollow trunk still stands beside the Church of St. Matthew. It is believed to be the oldest linden tree in Istria. An inscription states that the church was built beside a large linden tree.

Nature and Trails

A circular hiking route from Slum to the 1,014-meter-high summit of Žbevnica passes through mountainous landscapes with far-reaching views, along the eastern edge of the village of Brest, and through the forest back to Slum.

A marked hiking trail leads from Buzet railway station to the edge of the stepped plateau; Slum is approximately two kilometers away on foot. The route to Slum from Buzet railway station can return along the same path or form a loop via the edge of the plateau and the railway station. The walk along the edge of the plateau toward Slum offers views of Buzet, the Mirna Valley, and large parts of Istria.

Things to Do

The Raspadalica viewpoint on Ćićarija is visited by mountain bike enthusiasts. The launch site there is suitable for launching gliders and hang gliders. The Slum-2 MTB route was marked as a 23-kilometer route in the Municipality of Lanišće.

A pit near Slum has a vertical entrance with a descent to a depth of 60 meters.
