Tar combines historical heritage with trails through the olive groves of the Lanterna Peninsula.

Culture

The parish church of St. Martin in Tar preserves religious artworks and sculptures. In summer, it hosts classical music concerts. A stone inscription commemorates Pope Pius VII's visit to Tarska Vala on 13 and 14 August 1800.

The Santa Marina Fisherman's House is an interpretation centre where visitors can learn about the lives of local fishermen. The exhibition uses fishing equipment and objects to present fishing as an important activity in Tar and Vabriga.

History

The Stancija Blek-Sv. Križ archaeological zone near Tar is classified as a settlement and fortification from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Parts of the Roman villa rustica at Stancija Blek have been preserved in the tower walls built in opus quadratum. Remains of presses and olive mills indicate wine and oil production there.

The former site associated with Tar is now known as Stari Tar, also called Torre Vecchia. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Tar experienced a period of prosperity through oil and wine exports, which were connected with the port in Tarska Bay.

Things to Do

The 121 Staza Maslina is an official, easy cycling route covering 14.9 kilometres. It runs from Tar/Vabriga via Santa Marina and Stancija Blek to Vabriga. The tour explores the olive-growing area of the Lanterna Peninsula in a Mediterranean setting.

The From Olive to Oil trail is suitable for cycling. Its first section is also suitable for horseback riding; horses can be rented at the starting point. In connection with this route, there is a bus service for the return journey from Tar to Lanterna.

Landscape

In clear weather, Venice can sometimes be seen from the bell tower in Tar.
