Culture and History

Around 500 meters south of Brovinje are the church and abbey of “St. John the Beheader”. The church is a single-nave Romanesque building from the 14th century with a Gothic portal and bell gable; inside are frescoes from the early 15th century. The site includes a cemetery and the collapsed remains of St. John's Abbey. On the nearby Gradac hill once stood a Bronze Age hillfort and a medieval tower belonging to the Battiala family. Both were destroyed by the expansion of a quarry in the early 1990s.

Goli is in the immediate vicinity of Brovinje. Vižače, Brestovica, and Standar are located in the surrounding area of Brovinje.

The wider regional area includes the Archaeological Museum of Istria (Arheološki muzej Istre), Kastel, the Soardo-Bembo Palace, and Velike Gračište.

Nature

The spatial plan of Istria County groups the grasslands above Brovinje together with grasslands around nearby settlements in the Skitača area in a zone identified as a proposed area for a floristic reserve.

Hiking

The Vale-di-Tono Trail is a 15.7-kilometer circular route from Camp Tunarica through Viškovići, Skitača, and Crna Punta. A difference in elevation of 550 meters and a duration of 4.5 hours are also indicated.
