Hiking and cycling

The Path of St. Lucia leads from the Skitača mountaineers’ lodge through the village toward Brdo and ends at a spring about ten metres below the summit. The path is described as easy, mostly flat, and suitable for all age groups.

The Vale-di-Tono Trail passes through Skitača and forms a 15.7-kilometre circular route from Kamp Tunarica. The Bella Vista Trail reaches Skitača via Glušići Hill and offers views of the Kvarner; in clear conditions, Venice may also be visible.

For cyclists, the Bella Vista cycling route connects Labin and Skitača on a 30-kilometre circular route that takes approximately two to two and a half hours.

Nature and landscape

Skitača lies in a clearing at an altitude of 425 metres, surrounded by four hills. The St. Lucia spring is located on Brdo and collects water in a small hollow in the rock.

To reach the spring, drive from Labin via Brgod and Brovinje to Skitača; from the village, continue on an easy footpath of approximately one kilometre.

Culture and history

The Church of St. Lucia in Skitača was built at the beginning of the 17th century. It acquired its present form in 1924, when construction began on a bell tower that remains unfinished to this day. The church is a single-nave Baroque building with a central marble altar and two wooden side altars.

North of Skitača, St. Matthew’s Chapel stands in the forest of Prodol. It is a Gothic single-nave building. The Skitača mountain house is a converted old two-storey masonry house in the village, adapted for mountaineering use.

Cuisine

The recurring festival “Skitača – fešta od vina, maneštre, pršuta i sira” features local wines, traditional Istrian maneštra, prosciutto, and cheese.
