Nature
The area around Sveti Lovreč is a limestone landscape associated with red terra rossa soils known as “Crvena Istra”. After Čehići, San Lorenzo II (719) crosses a motorway overpass and continues along forest and field paths. The route is an easy 9.9-kilometre trail with an estimated duration of two hours and 145 metres of positive elevation gain.
Another loop hiking trail is Put vode (720). It is 11.2 kilometres long, connects water sources in the municipality of Sveti Lovreč and begins in the centre of Sveti Lovreč.
Culture
Sveti Lovreč, one of the best-preserved medieval fortified towns in Istria, lies near Čehići. The town still preserves the form of a prehistoric circular settlement, as well as visible fortifications from the Venetian period. Trokutna kula i zidine is listed among the monuments and cultural heritage features of Sveti Lovreč.
The Basilica of Saint Martin in Sveti Lovreč contains remains of contemporary frescoes described as some of the oldest in Istria. The Church of Saint Lawrence dates from the eighth century; its Romanesque bell tower was added in the eleventh century. Near Čehići, above the Lim, the remains of the Monastery of Saint Michael include churches dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Michael.
Lovrečeva is Sveti Lovreč’s main annual celebration. It takes place on 10 August and features a multi-day programme of cultural, musical, sporting and children’s activities. Smotra narodne glazbe i plesa is a traditional folk music and dance event in Sveti Lovreč. Traditional songs, instruments and dances are presented there, including the Istrian Balun and the polka. PhotoCity is an annual international photography competition in Sveti Lovreč for professionals and amateurs. Žive jaslice began in 2010 in Sveti Lovreč.
Food and Drink
In the municipality of Sveti Lovreč, OPG Vošten produces extra virgin olive oil from hand-picked olives using cold pressing. OPG Vošten invites visitors to visit its family farm. The agrotourism farm in Sveti Lovreč also has an olive oil tasting room. Old School Distillery produces spirits and liqueurs in a former school building.
