Culture

The main square is dominated by St. Jerome's Church, a single-nave Neoclassical building constructed between 1837 and 1840. St. Barnabas' Church is Istria's largest church with two apses and was built in the Romanesque period of the 12th or 13th century. Its frescoes depict the life of Christ from the Nativity to the Resurrection and also include a depiction of the Last Judgment.

The historic buildings include Fontik (Kuća „Lav“), Vižinada's oldest surviving public secular building, constructed in the 15th century. A tariff board from 1726 has been preserved there, regulating duties for trade and shipping on the Mirna River. Around thirty Glagolitic and Latin graffiti were discovered during the restoration of St. Barnabas' Church. They document the names and details of former local residents. Vižinada's cistern was built in 1782 according to a design by the Istrian architect Simeone Battistelle and fitted with Baroque ironwork by local blacksmiths.

Kuća Maraston dates from the transition between the 16th and 17th centuries and serves as a visitor center with multimedia content about the history of Vižinada. Nearby, in Božje Polje, stands St. Mary's Church, built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier religious building and monastery. The figures in this church's sanctuary are among the largest in Istrian fresco painting.

Nature and trails

The Parenzana is a reconstructed sports and recreation trail along the former railway line through Istria. The former Parenzana railway route was converted into cycling and hiking trails. On the Istrian section, it runs through valleys, green hills, vineyards, and olive groves, passing viewpoints overlooking medieval towns.

The Trail of Scenic Views begins at the southern entrance to Vižinada next to the 13th-century Church of St. John the Baptist and reaches a life-size model of the U20 locomotive that once ran on the Parenzana. The Sabadin or St. Vital Viaduct on this trail is 64 meters long and 20 meters high. The highest point of the trail is 353 meters above sea level, with views over the hills on both sides of the Mirna River.

The Heart of Vižinada is a 5.9-kilometer hiking trail designated as less difficult, with a stated duration of two hours. The Vižinada cycling route (101) is 24 kilometers long, connects with other trails, and includes five designated photo points.

The Parenzana Recreational Bike Marathon takes place annually in Vižinada in mid-September. It covers 46.7 kilometers and is accompanied by a hike of approximately 10 kilometers.

Cuisine

The regularly held Slatka Istra event presents traditional Istrian pastries such as pandešpanj, pinca, bucolaj, povetica, fritule, cukerančići, kroštule, briskve, and paštine as part of a vibrant culinary tradition. The 30-kilometer Staza dobrih okusa i doživljaja cycling route runs through agrotourism areas and along wine and olive oil roads, as well as past cultural monuments. It begins at a viewpoint near the former entrance to the Parenzana railway line.

In Vižinada, visitors can sample local olive oil; almost every farm grows olives and produces oil. A mill in Vižinada sells homemade, freshly milled flour.
