Jelenje: Hotels and Accommodation
Jelenje takes you from historical landmarks and preserved crafts to the mountain world of the GrobniÄke Alps. For some visitors, planning a trip also includes deciding which hotel to book in Jelenje.
Culture and History
The local museum in the Municipality of Jelenje features more than 500 exhibits. On display are old household items, tools, and traditional costumes. There is also a historic room and a kitchen representing the interior of a house from Grobinšćina in the 19th century.
The Church of St. Michael in Jelenje was built from 1812 to 1814, with completion work finished in 1821. The parish church has five bells, including one dating from 1604.
The Spomenik Podhumskim Žrtvama memorial in Soboli features 91 shields. They commemorate 91 villagers who were killed in July 1942. The Claustra Alpium Iuliarum defensive system includes the remains of a line of walls with five strategically positioned towers.
The KovaÄija in Jelenje has been preserved in its original form with traditional blacksmithing equipment. At the KovaÄija, blacksmith Damir MarÄelja demonstrates historical smithing techniques to visitors.
Nature and Trails
The RjeÄina Gorge is protected by law. A hiking trail follows the river and offers an opportunity to experience the gorge's flora and fauna.
The Hahlić mountain hut stands on the southern slope of ObruÄ at just under 1,100 metres above sea level. From Podkilavac in the Municipality of Jelenje, hikers can reach the hut in the GrobniÄke Alps at an altitude of approximately 1,100 metres; from there, the view extends to the Kvarner Gulf. The Hahlić mountain hut also offers views of Rijeka Bay.
Local Traditions
On the first weekend after Epiphany, the GrobniÄki dondolaÅ¡i make a traditional bell procession through almost all the settlements of GrobinÅ¡tina in the municipalities of Jelenje and ÄŒavle.
At Gašparov Mill, visitors can buy organic flour and see old tools. The mill still grinds corn and wheat in the traditional way.
The Polenta and Cheese Festival takes place at the end of June. It brings together a large communal polenta and Grobnik cheese.
Cycling
The Jelenjski vrh cycling route is a difficult 13.5-kilometre circular route with 309 metres of elevation gain.
