Culture and History
Korita’s heritage includes a fortified defensive tower associated with the defence against pirate attacks. Its strategic location served to monitor the Mljet Channel and the open sea.
In the centre of Korita, the Chapel of St. Vid stands next to the defensive tower. The Gothic-Renaissance building was completed in 1488 and preserves a Gothic chalice, a Renaissance pax, and a bronze service bell.
Korita also has the 15th-century Chapel of St. Ilija and the Church of Gospa od Brijega, which was likewise built in the 15th century. Its surviving heritage includes a Renaissance-Baroque structure and a lead pax made by an Italian master.
Pilgrimage and Local Character
The feast of Saint Ilija on 20 July is associated with a local pilgrimage tradition. The route leads from St. Vid through Korita and past Gospa od Brijega, while the revered image of Gospa is carried along.
Korita’s historical economy was connected with fishing, as well as the catching and sale of salted sardines, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries.
