The name Polače derives from a Roman palace dating from the 3rd century. The ancient residential palace complex of Polače was built at the end of the 5th century.

Polače contains the remains of a Roman villa rustica. There are also remains of three Early Christian basilicas. The Nodilove Košare archaeological site in Polače includes a 6th-century religious building.

The underwater area of the port of Polače, as well as the waters around Ovrata, Glavata, and Maslinovac, are of hydroarchaeological interest. Polače is associated with diving opportunities for exploring underwater archaeological remains, including amphorae and ancient pottery associated with ancient shipwrecks.
