Općina Povljana: Bird Reserve, Cycling Routes and Beaches

The Veliko blato bird reserve is a retreat for many waterbirds, especially during the breeding, migration and wintering seasons. Four of the island’s 14 cycling routes lie within the municipality. The beaches differ in their sand and pebbles, as well as in water depth and the amenities listed. There are also churches, a viewpoint and the klapa gathering “Povljana u pismi,” held every year in early July.

So far, 143 bird species have been recorded at Veliko blato. The reserve has a birdwatching tower and an information board. The area is 2 km from Povljana, along the paved road from Povljana to Vlašići. Lake Segal lies west of Povljana, next to Dubrovnik Beach. The lake contains healing peloid sediment; behind it, walking trails run through the forest. The Vidikovac viewpoint, on the road from Povljana towards Prutna, offers views of the town and its surroundings.

Perilo is a sandy beach with shallow water; it is suitable for water sports and especially for Picigin. Livade is also a sandy beach, where the water is very shallow. This beach is suitable for families with small children.

Mali Dubrovnik is a pebble beach with the Viverone promenade, a changing cabin and a shower. Dubrovnik Beach has an aquapark and pedal boat rentals. If you are planning a day at the beach, you can take these specific differences into account rather than choosing based on the beach name alone.

The Prutna cycling route crosses the rocky ridge of the Prutna peninsula and offers views of Stara Povljana Bay. The Smokvica cycling route begins 1 km from Povljana on the road to Stara Povljana Bay and ends in the fishing village of Smokvica. Salt pans lie along another route described as leading towards Old Pag; pilgrims from Povljana use this cycling route for the Assumption pilgrimage. Another route passes a small wood at Segal and then continues northeast through karst terrain. These routes differ in the landscapes and destinations specified for each.

The summer Maestral is considered suitable for windsurfers. When the wind picks up in the afternoon, it allows for faster windsurfing. This description makes wind conditions a specific consideration for personal travel planning without assuming a fixed daily schedule.

The klapa gathering “Povljana u pismi” has been held every year since 2002 in early July, in front of the church in St. George’s Square. The parish church of St. George was built in 1765.
