The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bednja is a Baroque-style medieval church with a façade remodelled in 1802, gravestones, and family tombs of the Drašković family. The church contains an organ by the Venetian master Gaetano Moscatelli, regarded as a rare example of the Italian school in Hrvatsko Zagorje. There is also a Baroque Marian wayside shrine from 1672 with the Christ Child.

Bednjanska music traditionally uses cimbule, bajs (double bass), and three violins, two of which play the lead and one of which serves as a contrasting voice. Most songs in this musical tradition use the bednjanska language. Kavaliri are a cimbule-and-violin ensemble from Bednja. Kavaliri preserve the indigenous music of the Bednja region. The formation was assembled in 1996 for the performance “Bednjanska svadba” by the KUD “Franjo Sert” from Bednja.

History

In the surroundings of Bednja, Trakošćan was established at the end of the 13th century as a small observation fortress in the defence system of northwestern Croatia, monitoring the route from Ptuj towards the Bednja Valley.
