In the historic centre of Prague, the medieval urban structure as a whole, including its layout and spatial composition, has been preserved. At the same time, it contains architectural works from the Gothic period of the 14th and 15th centuries, the High Baroque period of the first half of the 18th century, and the emerging modern era after 1900.

Culture and History

Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The extensive complex of palaces and religious buildings combines various architectural styles, including Romanesque remains from the 10th century and Gothic alterations from the 14th century. It was probably founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty.

Today, Prague Castle offers the public tours of historic buildings and exhibitions, concerts, and guided tours. The exhibition “The Story of Prague Castle” tells the thousand-year history of the site where Czech statehood emerged. Original objects from the collections of Prague Castle are on display; the exhibition also explores the stories of people who worked there and includes an interactive programme.

Charles Bridge is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Construction began in 1357 and was completed in 1402. Thirty statues and sculptural groups of saints guard the bridge.

Old Town Square was established in the 12th century and has witnessed many historical events. It had already served as a marketplace since the 10th century; regular annual markets offering various goods were held there. Since 1410, the oldest still-functioning astronomical clock in the world has measured time on the tower of the Old Town Hall.

The House at the Stone Bell is used by the Prague City Gallery to hold exhibitions and concerts.

Nature and Trails

With Stromovka, Prague has a large green oasis in the middle of the city. Mature trees, bodies of water, and lawns characterise the park, which also offers opportunities for picnics, walking, and relaxation. Stromovka also has many playgrounds and a network of paths and trails for recreation.

The Štvanická pedestrian bridge, also known as Lávka HolKa, is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The Všerubská and Železná pilgrimage routes begin in Prague at the Church of St James in the Old Town.
