Culture and History

The old town of Volary, with its log-house architecture, is an urban conservation area. Numerous preserved log and half-timbered houses in the Alpine style stand by the stream in the northern part of Volary. The Church of St. Catherine is an early Baroque landmark on Volary’s square.

The Volary Museum is located in one of Volary’s historic log houses. It features permanent exhibitions on the “Death March,” “Old Volary in Photographs,” the “Golden Trail,” “Fragments of History,” and the “Stations of the Cross.” The memorial to the victims of the death march in Volary commemorates 95 Jewish women who died there on May 4, 1945, while being transported from the Ravensbrück and Helmbrechts concentration camps.

The Stations of the Cross at the foot of Kamenáč fell into disrepair after 1945 but were restored in 2008.
