Väike-Maarja Parish is located in southern Lääne-Virumaa, on the Pandivere Upland and at the northeastern edge of the Endla Nature Reserve. To compare other destinations, you can also consider Käru.

Two large information boards explain Wiedemann, the language award, the planting of the oaks and the names of the recipients in Estonian, German, English and Russian. Visitors from a German-speaking perspective can therefore also use the multilingual information to gain a closer understanding of the site. The traditional F. J. Wiedemann Language Day is associated with the Keeletammik: the name oak of that year’s award recipient is planted on Language Day.

In the town center, the Emakeele Park consists of two parks established by people who developed and nurtured the Estonian language. In Jakob Liiv Park stands an oak planted by former Estonian president Lennart Meri. Another historic memorial is the Väike-Maarja Monument to Freedom. It commemorates those who fell in the First World War and the Estonian War of Independence and was unveiled on 14 June 1925.

The Äntu-Nõmme Nature Trail is located 7–10 km south to southeast of Väike-Maarja. Its four independently walkable sections divide the total length of 21 km into separate stretches. You can therefore plan for one section rather than the entire trail; the information provided does not indicate how long a walk takes. Nearby, Valgejärv is a swimming lake in summer.

Emumägi is the highest point of the Pandivere Upland and northern Estonia. A 21.5-meter-high wooden observation tower stands on the hill. Ski trails of 1, 2, 3 and 5 km begin at the Ebavere Sports Centre. In summer, these trails can be used for running, horseback riding and Nordic walking. A range of activities for different interests is therefore available, and the trail lengths help clarify the options without making any claims about duration or difficulty.

The fortified castle of Vao was built from local limestone in the second half of the 14th century. An exhibition in the castle presents the history of the fortress, the manor and the surrounding villages. The Võivere windmill is the only surviving building of the Võivere manor. The two destinations offer different historical themes: at Vao, the fortress and its surroundings; at Võivere, a surviving manor building.

Georgi Söögituba offers simple dishes made with local ingredients. Every year on 22 April, Georg Lurich’s birthday, it hosts the strength competition “Georgi Kange.” The fixed date makes the competition a specific point of reference for travel planning; the event should not be taken to mean that a program is available year-round.
