Culture and History
The Surami Fortress complex comprises a defensive wall, a fortress, St. George's Church, and a palace. Surami Fortress stands on a rocky hill on the left bank of the Suramula River in the northern part of the town and is divided into an inner citadel and a lower courtyard. St. George's Church within Surami Fortress was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. In the 1780s and 1790s, Surami Fortress served as an important outpost against raids from Dagestan into Upper Kartli.
