Nature

The Hársfasor, an avenue of linden trees classified as a natural asset, runs along the town’s main road. The avenue was planted by the Beekeepers’ Association at the end of the 1920s.

The Topolyfa stood in the area of Gerendás for 250 years and was marked as a landmark on historical maps. A sapling grown from a shoot of the Topolyfa was planted in 1994; the municipality placed a bench beside it and installed a carved memorial plaque commemorating the tree’s history. The Topolyafa is also listed in the catalogue of natural assets published by the tourism office of Békés County.

The park-like surroundings of Csicsely-tó in Gerendás are suitable for walks.

Culture and History

The war memorial in Gerendás, erected during the First World War, was completed in 1929 and bears a bronze Turul figure. The pyramid-shaped monument commemorating Hungary’s first concrete road recalls the road completed between Gerendás and Csorvás in 1931.

The Catholic Church of Szent István király in Gerendás was built in 1862 by Count György Apponyi. The church was granted parish status in 1927 and renovated inside and out in 1962. The Lutheran church of the Gerendás–Csorvás Lutheran affiliated congregation was built in the 1930s and consecrated in 1937 by Bishop Dr. Sándor Raffay.

The Hársfafesztivál in Gerendás was held as an annual festival featuring various programmes and a cooking competition. Another cultural connection is Mihály Munkácsy: in his youth, he spent a great deal of time at his uncle István Reök’s estate in Gerendás, where he drew and painted.
