Zákányszék Between Nature and Cultural Heritage

The present-day Szentháromság Church was created in 1924 by expanding an older chapel and was consecrated in 1925. Vass Miklós planted the old pedunculate oak, Kocsányos tölgy, in 1880; it is one of the country’s 100 oldest trees and is protected as a plant. A significant part of Ezerarcú Sömlyék lies within Zákányszék; its protected flora and fauna shape the experience from early spring to late autumn.

The church’s construction history is precisely documented: Magyari Nándor designed the conversion of the older chapel into the present-day Szentháromság Church, and master mason Gál Mihály carried it out. Bishop Glattfelder Gyula consecrated the church on July 25, 1925. The church’s history thus highlights both the building’s transformation and the people involved, as well as the date of its consecration.

The Papp Cross preserves a different kind of remembrance. Papp Vince had the cross erected in 1923 next to a farmstead in Zákányszék. It commemorates those who experienced the horrors of war at Doberdò and along the Isonzo. The Zákányszék Memorial Park is also a place of remembrance: established on the grounds of the old cemetery on Szegfű-János Street, it preserves the memory of those buried there.

Other historical connections include the house now known as Tömörkény House, which belonged to Tömörkény’s father-in-law. In the park at Lengyel Square, another detail adds a design accent: the tulip-shaped fountain by ceramic artist László Szalay has been part of the park since 2002.

The Házi Museum on Móra Ferenc Street presents characteristic aspects of traditional rural life. The Öregház Farmstead Museum is considered a professionally curated display of old household objects and tools from farm life, as well as everyday life in the past. Together, the two offer insight into different sides of rural life: its characteristic features on the one hand, and its objects and daily routines on the other.

Music is also part of local cultural life. The Zákányszék Peasant Choir was founded in the village in 1964 and performs as a folk music ensemble. Folk songs make up two-thirds of its repertoire. At Ezerarcú Sömlyék, protected and strictly protected flora and fauna offer different impressions of nature from early spring to late autumn. A different seasonal moment can be found near Zákányszék: in spring, water collects in the lowest parts of the saline depression, including at Lódri Lake.
