Nature

Szegedi Fehér-tó is part of the Pusztaszeri Tájvédelmi Körzet Landscape Protection Area and an internationally registered wetland. It plays an important role during the spring and autumn bird migrations.

The birdlife of the protected lake units can be observed from the Beretzk-Péter lookout tower on the Sirály educational trail; the lookout tower is also suitable for observing the autumn crane migration. The Sirály educational trail begins behind the poplar forest at the Kurgán-Természetvédelmi-Bemutatóhely nature conservation visitor site next to the E5 main road at kilometre 157. It can be explored on foot and by bicycle all year round.

Szatymaz's Temetődomb preserves ancient vegetation, including the dwarf iris (Iris pumila) and lemon thyme (Thymus citriodorus).

Things to do

The Tisza-völgyi Bemutatóház has a permanent exhibition on the protected natural assets of the Lower Tisza region. Cycling tours and guided nature walks can be requested there; all-terrain bicycles are provided for the cycling tours.

At the Kurgán visitor centre, guided tours can be booked by prior appointment; these can be supplemented with a 1- to 1.5-hour guided walk to Szegedi Fehér-tó.

Culture

At the Kurgán House, the characteristic burial mounds of the plain are presented in the context of history, folk tradition and nature conservation. The stained-glass window ensemble of the church in Szatymaz was created by the Budapest stained-glass artist and mosaicist Imre Zsellér; it is considered the largest of its kind in Hungary.

The new church in Szatymaz was built in the pointed-arch Gothic Revival style according to plans by Dezső Tápai from Szatymaz and the Szeged architect Endre Sebestyén (1888–1966), and has room for 1,200 worshippers.

History

Szatymaz's Temetődomb is a Bronze Age burial mound, or kurgan, built around 2000 BC.

The holiday villa of Lukács Enyedi, built in 1897 and also known as the Einsenstädter villa, is a Romantic-Eclectic villa with a hipped roof; its original window arrangement has been preserved. The Vedres-tanya, now the Postakocsi csárda, was built as a post station in 1800.

The Barcsay villa is still visible at the intersection of Neszűrjhegyi út and the road leading west from the settlement centre, now Kossuth Lajos utca 1, despite renovations. The Enyingi windmill is still visible on the road from Vasút utca towards Forráskút and is 9 metres high.
