History

The archaeological settlement of Talgar/Talkhir is identified with Talhiza, a settlement mentioned in a Persian geographical treatise from 982. The settlement is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It contains a citadel covering an area of 9 hectares.

The predecessor of modern Talgar was located on the steep right bank of the Talgar River, at the exit of a mountain gorge into the valley.

Culture

The St Nicholas Church in Talgar was built in 1908 according to a design by church architect Sergei Konstantinovich Troparevsky, with the participation of military engineer Yakov Antonovich Poroshin. It was restored by 1995 and reconsecrated on May 22, 1995. Local materials were used for its construction; its walls and upper sections are made of local Tian-Shan fir.

The Talgar District Central Mosque stands on the western side of Talgar on Qonayev Street. It was built from 1993 to 1996 with Turkish funding in the style of 16th-century Ottoman-Turkish architecture. The mosque has one large dome, twelve smaller domes, and a 36-meter-high minaret.

The St Paraskeva Church in Talgar was built in 1911. It was restored and reopened in 2005, when services resumed.

Nature

In the wider surrounding region, the tourist offerings of Ile-Alatau National Park include hiking and camping, climbing and mountaineering, birdwatching, skiing, cycling, horseback riding, and rafting. The park encompasses landscapes ranging from mixed-grass steppe and alpine meadows to snow- and glacier-covered peaks, as well as waterfalls, high-altitude lakes, and glaciers.

Local Experiences

Talgar's apple orchards welcome tourist groups from April through the end of October for walks through the orchards and pick-your-own activities. A viewpoint on a hill in Talgar offers a panoramic view of the city. Apples can be purchased at an orchard on Upper Talgar Road.
