Zharkent: Hotels and accommodations

The Zharkent Mosque is located in the center of Zharkent. Culture

In addition to the actual prayer hall, the museum complex of the Zharkent Mosque includes a main portal with a tower, a small mosque, a madrasa, side gates, a stone enclosure, and a small courtyard. The mosque has a 19-meter-high minaret surrounded by 52 columns. The complex’s wooden components were assembled without nails.

Another historic building is the Church of the Prophet Elijah. It was completed in 1892 after construction had lasted more than five years and been financed through donations. The building is made of Tien Shan fir wood on a foundation of brick and lime and has a bell tower with six bells.

The Abilkhan Kasteev Art Gallery is housed in a restored architectural and historical building with wooden beams dating from 1884. Its exhibitions change monthly, and additional exhibitions are also held there. A 1,450-square-meter park was opened in front of the Architectural Museum of the Zharkent Mosque. The Museum of Military Glory offers an excursion on the history of the local area.

Wellness

The Zharkent-Arasan wellness complex is located near Zharkent. It is 40 kilometers from Zharkent along a paved road, in a gorge on the Burakozhyr River at an altitude of 1,100 meters. Its wellness program includes thermal, radon, and mineral waters, as well as therapeutic mud baths and mud treatments. Zharkent-Arasan also offers balneotherapy, mud treatments, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercises, massages, baths, and therapeutic showers.

Cuisine

Street bakers, who prepare flatbreads in tandoor ovens, are part of the local scene. Street cooks prepare manty, samsa, and plov outdoors, even in winter.
