Prizren
Accommodation in Prizren
Prizren combines a long urban history with distinctive cultural sites and the Lumbardh River.
Prizren at a glance
The fortress stands on a hill and is a settlement shaped by more than 3,500 years of human presence. The historic center includes mosques, churches, and the Shatervan Fountain, among other sights. The Lumbardh flows through the city center; the Marash urban complex lies on its left bank.
Which historic sites can you discover?
Prizren Fortress is one of Kosovo’s most important cultural heritage sites. Its Archaeological Museum displays artifacts from widely separated periods: from the Eneolithic and Iron Age through the Illyrian-Dardanian, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval periods to the Ottoman era. This makes it possible to explore the region’s history through a range of different periods.
The religious buildings also tell the story of different historical layers. The Sinan Pasha Mosque was built in 1615. Its interior features floral and geometric motifs painted in three phases. The Suzi Çelebi Mosque dates to 1523; it is considered Prizren’s second-oldest Islamic site and the first with fully Islamic architecture.
The Church of St. Spas was built between 1333 and 1335 and is located in the historic center, on the southeastern side of Nen-Kalaja. The Church of St. Paraskeva is the only heritage site in Prizren under UNESCO protection. The Church of the Holy Saviour is also one of the city’s distinctive and valuable sites, owing to its prominent position and architectural style. These diverse buildings offer different points of interest if you want to explore Prizren primarily for its cultural and historical heritage.
How do you reach the fortress on foot?
Marked paths lead to the fortress from the old town: the ascent begins at Shadervan Square or in the Marash neighborhood and takes about 10–15 minutes uphill. Allow for the approximate travel time and climb when planning your day. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the fortress with a visit to the historic center as a separate activity, without requiring a specific route.
What do the river and Marash tell you about the city?
Marash lies in eastern Prizren, below the fortress on the left bank of the Lumbardh. The urban complex is also rich in underground watercourses and streams of the river. The Lumbardh itself runs through the city center; fishing has a tradition in Prizren as a recreational sport. If you’re interested in water and the urban landscape as well as the buildings, these offer further distinct themes to explore on your trip.
Another cultural and historical stop in the surrounding area is the Hydroelectric Power Plant–Museum of the Electricity Economy. It is located at the third kilometer of the road from Prizren to Brezovica and was converted into the Kosovo Electricity Museum in 1979. In Prizren itself, the Old Town Hall was fully restored in 2010/2011 and converted into the first Regional Cultural Heritage Center in the Balkans. The Shatervan Fountain stands in the middle of Shatervani Square in the historic zone and is considered one of the city’s landmarks.
Which cultural offerings shape Prizren?
Lumbardhi Cinema serves as an arts and community center. Its events include film screenings, concerts, performances, exhibitions, and lectures. The cinema was founded in Prizren in 1952 and later converted into a cultural monument. DokuFest’s history is also rooted in the city’s cinema culture: the festival began in 2002 with the screening of 20 films, mostly from Kosovo and neighboring countries, at what was then Prizren’s only cinema.
Another important historical chapter is the League of Prizren. Its assembly took place on June 10, 1878, in the League’s building complex. In 1978, the complex was converted into the Museum of the League of Prizren. Together with the mosques, churches, and Archaeological Museum, this offers a wide range of options for travelers who place particular importance on their destination’s cultural character when choosing a hotel.
To compare other destinations, you can also explore Dragash, Vragolija, Peć, Gjakova, Gnjilane, Zajmovo, Kmetovce, and Priština.
