Shankol: Hotels and accommodations

Nature

Nookat District encompasses valley and foothill areas with hot summers and moderately cool winters, as well as nival zones above 3,000 meters. The average July temperature is 24.4 Â°C in the valleys and 15.5 Â°C in the mountains.

The Shankol River is one of the main watercourses in Nookat District. Its sources lie in the Alay and Kichik-Alay mountain ranges and their foothills. Poplar groves and fruit trees are also described alongside the river. As the elevation increases, juniper appears on open slopes, while snow-covered peaks come into view in the upper valleys. Routes

The route leads from Tash-Machet Pass through the Utor Valley to Utor Pass and onward to Shankol Peak. The path to Shankol Peak runs along its southeastern slope and is rated 2A. Access to Tash-Machet Pass leads over alpine meadow trails and a steep slope of grass and scree. Shankol Peak is described as an excellent viewpoint.

Nookat District is served by the Osh–Nookat–Kyzyl-Kiya, Nookat–Aravan, and Nookat–Papan roads.

Culture

At the roadside on the approach to Shankol, a sacred site is described as a mazar in a niche. The writer and professor Abdykerim Muratov recalled years he spent in Shankol. His memories connect the place with a local literary figure.
