Ādažu Novads: Coastal Trails, the Gauja and Regional History
Ādažu Novads can be explored through trails, waterways and local history on very different scales. This is particularly tangible on the Zaļais ceļš: The scenic 13.5 km route is designed for walking and cycling and leads from the Gauja Bridge near Kadaga to Carnikava Beach.
Culture and Regional History
The Carnikava Local History Center presents an exhibition on the history of the region and its fishing traditions. The center offers free guided tours on weekdays and weekends. It is housed in a building designed as a replica of the “Cēlāji” fishermen’s and ferryman’s house built near the mouth of the Gauja in 1851. The offerings also include trips on the Gauja by fishing boat.
The audio guide “ĀDAŽI – Manors, Raftsmen and Innovation” also connects different historical periods of Ādaži Municipality. It leads to former manor estates, Soviet-era buildings and modern landmarks. The associated route is a circular course that begins and ends at Līgo Square in the center of Ādaži; it is approximately 12 km long and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Several missile hangars and military-style buildings have been preserved at the former Soviet military site of Mežgarciems. This site also includes a labyrinth-like arrangement of concrete slabs with relief motifs from the Soviet era, known as the “Deception Labyrinth.” Another way to explore the history of the area is the mural “Carnikavas stāsti”: It depicts the history and symbols of Carnikava and is considered a tourist attraction for visitors.
Trails Along the Gauja and Canal
At the beginning of the Carnikava promenade, there is a rental service for SUP boards and kayaks. The promenade leads from Carnikava to the beach on the Gulf of Riga. Between Carnikava and Ādaži, the Zvaniņu ceļš also runs along the left bank of the Gauja; it is a circular walking trail approximately 1 km long. For pedestrians and cyclists, there is also an approximately 2 km path along the Gauja–Baltezers Canal between Zušu iela and Podnieku iela.
The Gauja–Baltezers Canal itself formed a 3.1 km artificially constructed section of the historic Gauja–Daugava waterway and connected the Gauja with Lake Mazais Baltezers. When water levels are high, the canal can be navigated by canoe or SUP board. The connection between the waterside path and waterway remains subject to the stated route lengths and the condition of high water levels.
Zibeņi Disc Golf Park has 18 baskets; trees and the terrain serve as obstacles.
Nature Trails and Coastal Landscapes
For shorter circuits, the yellow route in Ūdensrožu parks is available. It is 2.4 km long, designed as a circular trail and has a low difficulty level. The approximately 4 km Rožu kāpa circular trail begins at Kalngale railway station and leads through the coastal landscapes of Piejūra Nature Park to the sea. In Garciems, a 650 m wooden walking trail runs as a boardwalk from Aizvēju iela to the sea through Piejūra Nature Park and the coastal dunes.
At the end of this wooden walking trail is the virtual 3D augmented reality object “Nēgi nāk.” The work by artist G. Gabrān represents the journey of the lampreys. A longer route is the Garezeru Nature Trail: The approximately 7 km route is linear and runs along the northern, central and southern Garezeru lakes. Carnikava also has an approximately 10 km walking route where visitors can explore the area’s cultural-historical and natural highlights.
Beach, Islands and Local Character
Lilastes Pludmale, a beach, is located in the vicinity of Ādažu Novads. Krievu Sala, an island, is located nearby. The vicinity of Ādažu Novads also includes Pērssala and Vadoņa Sala, which are likewise islands. The different descriptions of the geographical location are retained: Lilastes Pludmale, Pērssala and Vadoņa Sala are in the vicinity, while Krievu Sala is nearby.
The Nēģu svētki festival in Carnikava symbolizes the opening of the lamprey fishing season. This local connection is complemented by Inga Pole, who makes entirely handmade ceramics from black and white clay using the coiling technique. Carnikava is also home to the Boat House Chapel at Stacijas iela 21. It serves as a stopover and accommodation for pilgrims on the Latvian section of the International Camino de Santiago.
