Burtnieki – Lake, Nature and Manor Culture

Lake Burtnieks is the fourth-largest lake in Latvia. Around the lake are sandstone outcrops on the steep shore, formed by wave erosion and considered the only outcrops of their kind in Latvia. The historic character of Burtnieki includes Burtnieki Manor Castle and its park. The castle was built in the 17th century on the foundations of a destroyed Order castle. The park combines elements of the Italian Renaissance with features of a landscape garden and was designed in the eclectic style of the 19th century.

The Vīsraga Nature Trail is located in the Burtnieka ezera pļavas nature reserve. It leads through Burtnieki Manor Park to Lake Burtnieks and the flood meadows of the Ēķinupe. The trail therefore connects several distinctly different landscapes: the historic park, the lakeshore and open wet meadows. A viewing tower on the nature trail offers views over the flood meadows and the southeastern shore of Lake Burtnieks.

The Silzemnieku nature observation tower is also located on a clearly designated side of the lake: it stands on the northeastern shore of Lake Burtnieks. From there, you can observe the lake landscape and various bird species. The two viewpoints therefore offer different perspectives, and their locations should not be confused. Around the lake, the sandstone outcrops formed by wave erosion add a geological feature to the landscape.

The VÄ«sraga Nature Trail also passes the ruins of a castle of the Livonian Order. The ruins of a Livonian Order castle form a historical contrast with Burtnieki Manor Castle. In the vicinity of Lake Burtnieks, there are also a chapel built in the Classicist style and a cemetery gate. Both are designated as architectural monuments of national significance.

Another distinct focus is the Burtnieki Stud Farm, where around 200 horses are kept. The approximate number indicates the size of the herd, but does not automatically say anything about a particular visitor offering. When choosing between nature, culture and horse-related themes, it therefore remains important which of these documented sites you would like to place at the centre of your visit.
