Vecate: Park, Salaca and Cultural History

Vecate combines parkland, the Salaca and visible traces of the region’s cultural history.

Near Vecate, the Salaca flows out of Lake Burtnieks and into the sea at Salacgrīva. This connects Vecate with a river course that also places the village within its regional context.

A manor once stood in Vecate Park on the left bank of the Salaca, near its outflow from Lake Burtnieks. Today, only ruins and the park remain. More than 20 different tree species grow in the park, including exotic species.

A prominent landmark is the sculpture “Vēstures liecinieks”. It is made of granite, stands more than two metres tall and weighs six tonnes. The sculpture is located in the centre of Vecate village, at the edge of the Matīši–Mazsalaca road.

Key facts about Vecate

The park combines historical remains with various public facilities.

What role does the Salaca play?

“Salacas mauciens” is an annual night-time boat trip on the Salaca. It begins at the bridge in Vecate and ends near the bridge in Salacgrīva. The route connects the two places along the Salaca.

The cultural points of interest are located in different places: the former manor stood on the left bank of the Salaca, near its outflow from Lake Burtnieks; the sculpture stands in the village centre; and Tūteres svētozola vieta is located in the nearby area. Thus, the park, village centre and surrounding area are spread across clearly distinct sites. In addition, STRAUME provides the required briefing and, if needed, training.

The sculpture “Vēstures liecinieks” commemorates the Stone Age settlements in the area around Lake Burtnieks. Vecate and the area around Lake Burtnieks are rich in Stone Age finds. Those interested in the region’s history will therefore find both a visible memorial site in the village centre and a broader archaeological context.

Which places can you compare as well?

For further travel planning, you can compare Vecate with Mīlīte, Matīši and Burtnieki. This keeps other location options visible in the same travel plans alongside the park and the Salaca.
