Rūmene at a glance

The present main house of Rūmene Manor was built in 1876 to a design by architect Theodore Zeiler. The landscaped park covers 7.8 hectares and was laid out in 1892 by landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt. The park features three glass sculptures by Latvian artist ernestO (Ernests Vītiņš). Hotel guests can use a walking trail around Lake Rūmene and through the forest, as well as a rowing boat and a SUP board; this equipment is available in limited numbers only.

How do the manor house and park connect?

The park’s design is expressed in more than just the size of the grounds. On a terrace, vine-covered pergolas in the style of the Italian Renaissance connect the manor house with the park. At the back of the house, a staircase also connects it to the park below. These two transitions take different forms: pergolas define a terrace in one place, while a staircase leads from the rear façade into the park in another.

The architectural styles also make their own distinct statements. The terrace is explicitly associated with the Italian Renaissance; the staircase is considered one of the most impressive Neo-Renaissance structures of its kind in Latvia. Architecture enthusiasts will therefore find both the design of an outdoor space and an architectural detail at the rear of the manor house.

What cultural history and art will you encounter?

The park is home to three unique glass sculptures by Latvian artist ernestO, also known as Ernests Vītiņš. The artworks are among the estate’s defining features and add an artistic perspective to its landscaped grounds. The estate’s history also tells of cultural encounters: during Latvia’s first period of independence, the musical brothers Arvīds and Ervīns Dauguļi lived at Rūmene Manor. They hosted numerous gatherings there for members of the cultural and artistic communities. The manor is thus associated both with visual art in the park and with a historical role as a gathering place for cultural events.

What activities are available around Lake Rūmene?

Activities for hotel guests include walking and time on the water. The walking trail goes around Lake Rūmene and through the forest. Hotel guests can go out on the lake in a rowing boat or on a SUP board. As the equipment is available in limited numbers, bear this in mind when planning a trip.

Another option is a traditional Latvian sauna ritual in the sauna house on the shore of Lake Rūmene. It is offered under the guidance of a sauna master. Alongside the walking trail and trips on the water, this guided ritual offers a different way to experience sauna culture in the lakeside setting.
