Saulkrasti – Coast, Nature and Culture for Your Travel Planning

The Saulrieta taka is a 3.6-kilometre forest trail along the seashore. It leads through a dune forest with 20 distinctive pine trees, some of which are up to 200 years old. The White Dune lies on the right bank of the Inčupe near its mouth into the sea, is 18 metres high and offers a view of the Gulf of Riga from its lookout point. In the surrounding region, the Piejūra protected area is part of the nature park and Natura 2000 areas; among other things, it protects wooded dunes, grey dunes, coastal meadows and lakes and includes parts of Saulkrasti Municipality.

On the Saulkrasti–Lauči section of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route, you can cover the first kilometres to Zvejniekciems on the beach or along a trail running through the dune forest. This means that the same coastal section offers two different trail experiences: a beachside option and a route through the dune forest. There is also an old wooden hut with fishing nets and tools along this section.

The Seaside Park complements the coastal landscape with play equipment, outdoor exercise facilities, gym equipment and volleyball courts. At the Centre bathing area, SUP boards can be rented and jet-ski rides taken on sunny, warm summer days without wind. The bathing area has been awarded the Blue Flag.

The Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum houses the only collection of historic bicycles in Latvia. In Neibāde Park, a monument commemorates the founders of the seaside resort of Neibāde. Baron August von Pistolkors had it erected in 1877. The park is designed in the English style; when the Neibāde resort was founded in 1823, concern for the recreation of its guests began there.

The Saulkrasti–Pēterupe Lutheran Church is another historic cultural site. Its furnishings add a religious and artistic testimony to the history of the former seaside resort.

Those looking for outdoor exercise will find, alongside the coastal trails, the multifunctional cycling track in Saulkrasti. It includes the educational BTA Velozinis adventure course with various wooden elements. The course therefore has a different focus from the trails by the sea and is geared towards active engagement with the cycling track and its structures.

Zvejniekciems was established in the 19th century as a village inhabited by fishermen. In 1967, part of Skulte’s Zvejniekciems was incorporated into the urban area of Saulkrasti. This history complements the nature and coastal themes with a specific insight into the area’s former settlement structure.
