Discover Sigulda

Sigulda combines the Gauja Valley with distinctive natural sites, historical complexes, and various ways to experience the landscape. For planning your trip, you can choose from peaceful trails and cultural sightseeing as well as cable car, cycling, and adventure activities.

Key facts about Sigulda

The walls of Gūtmaņala preserve the oldest inscriptions, dating from the 17th century. Paradīzes kalns can be reached from the centre of Sigulda in about 30 minutes on foot; the access route follows level nature trails.

Sigulda also has several points of interest that differ in historical and cultural character: the stone castle of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword was built from 1207 onwards, while construction of Turaida’s stone castle began in 1214 on the site of a previously existing wooden castle belonging to the Livonian leader Kaupo, which had been burned down in fighting.

Which landscapes and trails characterize the area?

A walking trail connects the Gauja Valley with Šveices iela near Sigulda’s “Baltais flīģelis” art school. Another specific trail option leads to Paradīzes kalns. From there, the landscape is defined by the Gauja Valley and the Gauja, 80 metres below. The site is also known as Gleznotājkalns because J. Feders, J. Rozentāls, and V. Purvītis painted its landscape.

The trails around Gūtmaņala are suitable for leisurely walks and for observing plants and possibly also animals in Gauja National Park.

What active experiences are available?

During the warmer months, the “Sigulda” bobsleigh and luge track offers summer-bob rides; in winter, Vučko, skeleton bob, and ice rafting are available.

The Sigulda cable car crosses the Gauja Valley and offers views several kilometres into the landscape. At Tarzāns Adventure Park, the high-rope obstacle park has 11 courses and more than 140 obstacles arranged in trees at heights of up to 20 metres. The Sigulda–Murjāņi–Sigulda route is 30.2 kilometres long.

Which cultural sites merit closer consideration?

The 42-hectare Turaida Museum Reserve contains archaeological, architectural, historical, and art-historical monuments. The monuments are connected with events spanning more than a thousand years, beginning in the 11th century.

Sigulda New Castle was built between 1878 and 1881 as the summer residence of the Kropotkin family. It is a state-protected monument of architectural significance. Its national-romantic interior has been preserved to this day and was restored from 2017 to 2021. The interior and modern exhibitions can be visited there; a variety of cultural events are also held.
